The RSPCA’s welfare standards cover every aspect of animals’ lives, from health and diet to their environment and care.

Room to move and play

Animals must have plenty of space to move around and stay active, whether indoors or outdoors. When outdoors, they must have access to shade and shelter from the sun, wind and rain. They’re never kept in cages or crates.

Comfortable living space

The standards also require animals to have plenty of clean, comfortable bedding or ‘litter’ (usually wood shavings), and their living spaces must have fresh air.

An interesting environment

Animals must have what they need to help them stay mentally and physically healthy, like perches for chickens, straw for pigs to root in and brushes for cows to scratch on.

And much more…

  • Space to move freely
  • No cages
  • A good diet
  • Gentle handling
  • Responsible use of antibiotics
  • Enrichment, such as straw bales for chickens to peck at
  • Good water quality for salmon and trout
  • Natural light for chickens, hens and turkeys
  • Access to outside grazing for cows
  • A comfortable place to sleep
  • Shade and shelter for free-range hens, chickens, pigs, turkeys, cattle and sheep
